NHS Hypertension (BP) Case-Finding Service

Get your blood pressure checked for free at The Village Pharmacy.

What is the NHS Hypertension Case-Finding Service?

This NHS-funded service allows eligible adults to have their blood pressure checked quickly and easily at our pharmacy. High blood pressure often has no symptoms, which is why it’s sometimes called a “silent killer.” Left untreated, it can lead to serious complications such as heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease, and vision problems.

The aim of this service is simple:
✔ Find undiagnosed high blood pressure early
✔ Support people at risk so they can stay healthy
✔ Reduce preventable illness through early intervention

This is part of the NHS’s wider prevention strategy, helping people access healthcare conveniently in their community.

Why Is Blood Pressure Monitoring Important?

Regular blood pressure checks can help you understand your cardiovascular health and catch potential problems early—even if you feel fine.

High blood pressure rarely causes noticeable symptoms, but over time it can place extra strain on your heart, blood vessels, and organs. Early detection allows for steps—such as lifestyle changes or medication—to keep it under control.

Low blood pressure is less common but can still cause issues such as dizziness, fainting, and fatigue.

What Are Normal Blood Pressure Levels?

  • Normal: Between 90/60 mmHg and 120/80 mmHg
  • High-Normal: 120–139 / 80–89 mmHg
  • High Blood Pressure (Hypertension): 140/90 mmHg and above
  • Low Blood Pressure (Hypotension): Below 90/60 mmHg

What Happens if My Blood Pressure Is Too High or Too Low?

If Your Blood Pressure Is Too High

If your initial reading is higher than expected, we may:

  • Offer a second reading after a short rest
  • Schedule you for ABPM (Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring)
  • Provide lifestyle advice (diet, exercise, salt intake, smoking cessation, etc.)
  • Refer you to your GP if needed

If Your Blood Pressure Is Too Low

If you have low readings, we may:

  • Review possible causes, such as dehydration or medication
  • Provide advice on managing symptoms
  • Recommend seeing your GP if needed

Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM)

If your in-pharmacy reading suggests high blood pressure, we may offer 24-hour ABPM, a key part of the NHS service.

ABPM involves wearing a small, lightweight monitor for 24 hours. It measures your blood pressure at intervals throughout the day and night, giving a far more accurate picture than a single reading.

We will:

  1. Fit the monitor for you in the pharmacy
  2. Explain how it works and what to expect
  3. Ask you to return it the next day
  4. Review your results and explain what they mean
  5. Refer you to the GP if further investigation or treatment is needed

ABPM is completely free as part of this NHS service.

Who Can Use This Service?

The NHS Blood Pressure Service is available free of charge to adults who:

  • Are aged 40 or over
  • Have not previously been diagnosed with hypertension
  • Are under 40 but have risk factors for high blood pressure (pharmacist discretion)
  • Have been referred by their GP for convenient community monitoring
